Cross Field PDR Training
What is PDR?
PDR is an acronym for paintless dent repair, which is a technique that addresses the repair of dents and dings, such as those caused by hail, run-ins with shopping carts, or blunt objects. PDR is a radical departure from traditional body repair methods in that no sanding, filling, priming, or painting is needed to effect the repair. These characteristics make PDR an extremely affordable solution for these kinds of repairs, so much so, that the popularity of PDR is exploding among vehicle owners.
This unprecedented demand for PDR threatens to overwhelm the industry because there are not enough trained technicians available to keep pace!
An Overview of the PDR Process
A PDR repair has 4 basic elements:
- Damage assessment
- Accessing the damage
- Determine the tools needed and plan out the repair
- Complete the repair
I know what you’re thinking. That doesn’t sound any different from what you would expect for a traditional repair!
That’s true! However, the reasons for these steps are different. Damage assessment determines whether the dent or ding qualifies for PDR. Not every dent or ding will be suitable for the PDR method. Unobstructed access to the reverse side of the damage (dent or ding) is required. This may mean removing components, such as door panels or tail lights, for example. Determining the tools required is key to the procedure. These are highly specialized tools, most of which are unheard of in the traditional repair world. Completing the repair must be done in such a manner that no further damage is incurred, which requires an extraordinary level of expertise and experience given the confined spaces in which the technician must carry out the job.
Do You Need a Training Course?
Fortunately, excellent PDR courses are available, and their importance to the success of those aspiring to a career in the PDR industry cannot be overstated. This repair method is both art and science. The science is readily taught, but the art comes from hands-on experience, which is only available in a comprehensive PDR training program. Graduates of such programs have gained an in-depth knowledge that enables them to use highly specialized tools and techniques of PDR on both steel and aluminum components. Such programs provide students adequate experience in repairing a variety of dents and dings on a wide range of vehicle makes and models.
Only a comprehensive training program can turn out graduates that can meet their customer’s expectations.
How Do You Choose a PDR Training Program?
Anyone interested in a career in the PDR field must do their due diligence and vet the program on offer. For example, do they have a track record, do they have experienced teachers, do they offer personalized attention, do they have small class sizes, do they offer hands-on experience?
When choosing a training program, keep this adage top-of-mind, “You get what you pay for.”
